Personalification in "Charge of the Light Brigade"

Summary: In the poem "Charge of the Light Brigade," Alfred Lord Tennyson uses personification to describe death and hell. The imagery of mouths devouring men gives the impression that death and hell are insatiable beasts that can never be satisfied.
This poem uses a few different poetic devices that all combine to contribute to the poem as a whole. First off the poem uses personification when it says "Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell." Obviously death and hell are non-living things, but the author chooses to describe the men going to their deaths as being swallowed. Death has a jaw that's open for the men to march into. An open mouth implies that the creature (as death is being described) is hungry for more. It is devouring the men whole. Then hell takes them into its mouth. By using the idea of mouths, the author also makes it seems as though the men are prey and death is a hunter waiting to catch them with its jaws. This makes people feel sorry for the poor men who are being swallowed by death, which is...
