Summary: An overview and analysis of the Multi Fiber Trade agreement. What it was, Why it was instated, how it affected the world, and what should be done in the future
As developing countries were beginning to gain access to the global trade market, wealthy industrialized countries started to become threatened by the competition. Third World countries could produce larger amounts textiles more cheaply because of their low wages, sweat shop working conditions, and the use of child and slave labor. As a result in 1974 a trade agreement was struck to regulate the amount of textiles exported from each third world country. This agreement was called the Multi Fiber Agreement, and it was enacted to provide time for the industrialized countries to adjust their markets to compete with the new business competitors. As part of a global trend toward free trade, the Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) was phased out on January 1, 2005. To ensure this phase out results in an orderly peaceful readjustment of the textile market in Asia, China should maintain its previously instituted duties on textile exports. This...
