Samuel Colt
Summary: Samuel Colt (1814-1862) was an inventor and successful manufacturer of firearms. His achievements include inventing the first revolving firearm, the "six-shooter," and starting his own firearms manufacturing company, which turned out over 150,000 pistols a day by 1857.

Sam was born on July 19, 1814 in Hartford, Connecticut where he was one of three children in the household of Chris and Sarah Colt. When Sam was seven he took apart his first pistol. His mother also died when he was seven. After this, Chris Colt had to place his children in foster homes. Sam avoided school as much as possible. When he was ten, his father sent him to Ware, Massachusetts to work in the dyeing and bleaching company which Sam later operated. Sam was thirteen when he went to school at Amherst, Massachusetts.
