In early European history, power was held by a variety of absolute monarchs who ruled their kingdoms with virtually unlimited powers. Even in today's modern society, dictatorial regimes continue to flourish and devastate the lives of civilians. Under dictatorial rule, there are no civil rights whatsoever and everything the state owns is virtually the property of the dictator. Dictators come in power in a variety of different ways. Some are elected into power (like Adolf Hitler) and some seize power in a coup.
