Symbols are used frequently in society and are employed to represent something other than what they appear to be. They can represent events, places, people, groups and ideologies. In dramatic performances, symbols help enhance and convey the dramatic meaning. X-Stacey, a play that was written by Margery Ford in 1998, utilizes many symbols and is a great example to explore the significance of them. The symbols also help reveal relationships between characters. The play discusses the social issue regarding that any form of addiction to escape reality is destructive. It enters into the lives of a family who suffers the effects of a drug and religious addiction to escape reality. The three symbols included in X-Stacey that will be addressed are; a DJ corresponding with a priest, a water bottle corresponding with the bible and a toy smurf corresponding with the Saint of Teresa of Avila.
