The History of the Catholic Reformation and the Spread of Protestantism
Summary: The story of Martin Luther's 13th century reformation of the Catholic Church and how it lead to the creation of the Protestant religion. Luther felt salvation could be accomplished without adherance to the Roman Catholic Church and its emphasis on works. The Protestant religion based on Luther's 95 theses spread throughout northern Europe.
Catholicism has gone a long way throughout its years of existence, undergoing intense changes during the 16th century which included the forming of Protestantism. A series of religious wars, a struggle of words and emotion, broke out involving the Catholic Church and those who opposed it. This period of time was called the Reformation, an era where centuries of unity in the church started to fall to bits due to different views on Christianity. The Reformation was sparked by disagreements between the Catholic Church and humanists who believed that it had become too corrupt. The ignorance of the church initiated humanists to revolt against its teachings and the authority of the pope. As a result, the Reformation was started.
