In 1884, it took the encouragement of Garbriel Dumont to persuade Louis Riel back to Canada from Montana, USA, to help the Metis. When his petition to unite the people was disregarded by the government, rebellion broke out the next year. The North-West Rebellion of 1885 affected not only the Metis, the Aboriginals, and the Western Settlers, but in fact the entire country of Canada. There were definite winners and losers following this uprising.
The Aboriginals lost their freedoms and rights as a result of the North-West Rebellion. Prior to this, the Aboriginals began to lose their buffalo and other surplus food, so they had no choice but to move onto reserves. On 1871, there was the first treaty between the Aboriginal peoples in the west. Also, some Aboriginals who had taken part in the rebellion, lost their annual Government payments.
