The History and Rules of Volleyball
Summary: A brief history of the origins of volleyball, including its invention in 1895, and a summation of his most-important rules.
The sport of volleyball originated in the United States. It was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895. The original name for the game was "mintonette." During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name. Thus, the name was changed.
On July 7, 1896 at Springfield College, the first "official" game of volleyball was played.
In 1964, volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In 1984, the United States won their first medals at the Olympics.
Basic Rules of Volleyball
- Your team is allowed to hit the ball up to three times before it goes over the net.
- The same person may not hit the ball two times in a row...someone else must touch the ball in between hits. That someone could be on your team, or the other team...
