Summary: In James Thurber's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," the title character retreats into a world of imagination and illusion to espcape his miserable, duty-filled life.

In the short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by James Thurber, the main character Walter Mitty, due to incompetence, retreats into his own world where he has his illusions. Mitty always had his wife ragging on him because she thought that he was not doing his duty as the man of the house. In his illusions, Mitty fulfills all his horrible reality life, there at a point he becomes a well known doctor. There, he dreams of all the impossible that he can not accomplish in reality. Due to his unhappiness with his life, Mitty finds himself daydreaming while he is doing important activities like driving. Through his incompetence and not being happy with his life, he retrieves into a world of illusion.
