Supernatural Encounters in William Shakespeare's "Macbeth"
Summary: In his plays, William Shakespeare used the supernatural as a means through which to achieve plot and character development. In the case of "Macbeth," he uses the supernatural to introduce the darker side of Macbeth's personality. The three witches represent the primary supernatural component of the play; they succeed in fueling Macbeth's ambition, starting him down the path to madness, and providing him with a false sense of security that would eventually lead to his downfall.
The use of supernatural is a tool used by Shakespeare in Macbeth, and in many other works of art by introducing the other, darker side of characters, usually the protagonist, and is important in plot and character development throughout the story.
The witches are the main supernatural part of the play Macbeth, which have affected the main character Macbeth in three main ways... First, they put the idea of him being king into his head, which added fuel to his already high ambition. Next, they stated Banquo's children would be on the throne, and Macbeth assumes it is the throne after him, which adds the spark and starts a flame of madness in Macbeth and lady Macbeth.
