Pathos in Betty Keller's "Tea Party"

Summary: Betty Keller's short story "Tea Party" is about Alma and Hester, two elderly sisters who reminisce about their past experiences while awaiting the newspaper boy. Keller uses tone, diction, and plot to depict Alma and Hester as two proper yet lonely ladies, as well as to convey the emotions they feel when the newspaper boy comes and goes without speaking to them. For its length, the story is drenched with emotion, particularly sorrow for the two sisters.
In Betty Keller's Tea Party two lonely elderly sisters reminisce about their past experiences while waiting for the newspaper delivery boy. Although Tea Party is too short to present major conflict and changes for the main characters, yet it is long enough to where they are individualized. Keller manages too depict Alma and Hester's characters and situations while conveying emotion. She does this through the use of tone, diction, and plot.

The tone of the story is one of lonely pathos. Alma and Hester are beyond their prime and have outlived all of their friends and relatives. The only visitors they receive are the people who come to perform various services such as delivering the paper.
