Is Jake Barnes Heroic in The Sun Also Rises?
Summary: The character Jake Barnes in Ernest Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises can be justly described as a Hemingway Code Hero. He does so not by displaying the traits of courage and success that fit the hero stereotype, but rather by surviving the struggles of his everyday life that constantly test his character. He endures the emotional pain of his disability with dignity, he imposes peace through his chaotic world with his personal values, and he tries to enjoy the simple pleasures that add meaning to his life. These qualities of stoicism, morality, and intelligence truly distinguish Barnes as a hero.
The hero is a common characteristic in Ernest Hemingway's writings. A type of hero was created from his characters and was called the Hemingway Code Hero. The novel The Sun Also Rises is no exception to this rule. Jake Barnes is a submerged hero burdened by a handicap that would crush most men. Despite his failures at pretty much everything that he attempts to do. He is one of only two heroes, along with Pedro Romero in this novel. The heroism of Barnes is shown in several ways. He fought in a war, prays,labors,suffers, helps,loves with passionate faithful emotion, and goes through acts of purgation (Gurko 57). Even with his physical disability and his emotionally sterile existance, Jakes perseverence allows him to emerge stoically as a Code Hero by surviving the struggles of everyday life.
