The Negative Effects of Affirmative Action
Summary: The reasons why Affirmative Action was created in the United States, which was a result of the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964. The author believes that Affirmative Action actually hurts the educational experiences for African-Americans and other racial minorities.
Recently a male student and a female student both applied to Yale. Yale accepted one and rejected the other. The girl scored a perfect 1600 on her SATs and maintained a 4.1 GPA. The boy received a 1350 on his SATs and had no other outstanding merits (Alex). If you were going to judge based on this the person that Yale chose, it seems obvious that you would pick the female student. However, you are missing a crucial piece of information. The male student was Hispanic and the female student was Asian (Alex). Although everyone is constantly telling us to look beyond our racial differences, and that all people are the same no matter what their skin color is, in this instance skin color was very important.
