The Extended Metaphor of "Your Silence"
This poem is a good example of an extended metaphor, and shows a lot of imagery. The pond is associated with the thoughts and desires of the person that is confining them. In the first line, "Your silence today is a pond where drowned things live" it is implying that the author knows that the person is not saying what they have hidden in their mind. "Drowned and live" shows us that these feelings and thoughts have been their for a while, lingering and are waiting to appear, and the author is aware of this. "I want to see raised and dripping and brought into the sun" says that the author wants these hidden thoughts or feelings to appear. There is no need to wait for the right moment. The author wants to see everything just as they are, hiding nothing...
