They were sources that physicians would use to figure out what was wrong with someone and what could be the cause for their sickness/disease. The four humors consisted of blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm ("Theory of The Four Humors"). The four humors were believed to be balanced in a healthy person("Medicine"). The four served different purposes in life. Blood was the source of life. It would distinguish the living from the nonliving. Blood was the capacity for someone to live and develop as a human. Black bile was considered to be almost evil like. It was more problematic than the rest of the humors. Black bile was believed to darken other fluids and contaminate them.
