The Road We Take, an Analysis

Summary: Reviews and analyzes the story, The Roads We Take, by O. Henry. Describes the setting, characters and plot of the story. Also details the major theme of the story.
Setting:

Twenty miles West of Tucson, the Sunset Express was stopped at a tank to take on some water. Bob Tidball and Shark Dodson were going to rob the train, but this was all a dream. Shark Dodson was actually in his office at Dodson & Decker, Wall Street brokers. He was making deals with one of his clients.

Characters:

Shark Dodson of the firm Dodson & Decker, Wall Street brokers was dreaming that he was robbing a train but he was actually sitting in his office selling his shares. Dodson was the sort of evil and greedy man. He wanted all the money to himself. In his dream he kills his partner Bob Tidball and keeps all the stolen money from the train. But out of his dream he was almost doing the same thing. Being greedy, he is setting his deals. He sells the share for almost double the price that he bought them for, which makes him even richer.

Plot:

The character motivation is that he wants all the money to himself so he shoots and kills his friend to take all the money. That ties into conflict; he is versus his so called friend but eventually kills him to have all the money. Out of his dream when he is awake he is selling his shares for almost double the price he had bought them for and he is stealing all of his client's money.

Theme:

The theme of this short story is that the character Shark Dodson is an evil and greedy man. Quote "The expression on Dodson face changed in an instant to one of cold ferocity mingled with inexorable cupidity. The soul of the man showed itself for a moment like an evil face in the window of a reputable house." This means that Dobson is evil and wants all the money he can possibly get by doing that he doubles the price.

Style:

This is an omniscient narrator. The narrator reveals what the character is thinking. The character is a greedy person and the narrator reveals that by quoting the sentence that I showed in the theme because is says that the character show itself like and evil face. That enters with theme because Dobson is evil and greedy and steals money from his clients while doing his deals then in his dream he is doing the same thing stealing money from that train.
