Robert Frost occupies a unique position in modern poetry today. As Lynen puts it, "On the surface, his work has a disarming simplicity which sets it apart." It would be easy to say that Frost defies some of the concepts of modern poetry.
We expect bold metaphor and find him writing in comparison; we expect a tension of feeling and find him writing in the relaxed mood of conversation; we expect myth and fine that he gives us anecdote; we expect poetry about the revelations of modern life and find him writing about the beauties surrounding nature (Lynen, 3).
He does not work only through bold metaphor or allegory, but in his poetry views reality from a carefully selected point of vantage in its universal aspect. In his characteristic, poems in this vantage point, of the rural world, make him in his essence, a pastoral poet.
