As a young man of twenty-one, Amos Stouffer kept a pocket diary containing a number of significant issues and events during the time of the Civil War. He escaped the draft, but was still very aware of the events and casualties during the Civil War. Stouffer's reactions to the events in the southern states suggest that citizens followed the news of the war very closely.
Stouffer opens his journal with an introductory passage written on a flysheet of paper. In this passage, he states,
"One more year has passed away, and in the history of our Country it has been an important one. Yes, the most important one since the date of our independence... Previous to this date we were a peaceable & prosperous nation and in the advent of this revolution we were engaged in peaceable pursuits and therefore were found defenseless..." (Piston 212).
