Genetically Modified Organisms - Transgenenic Crops
Summary: Although it is argued that GM technology might bring imbalance to the ecosystem, in other words a manipulation of nature and destroying intrinsic values of natural organisms bringing mankind's downfall, more rationally, it should be suggested that temporarily the use of GMOs are inevitable to sustain society.
GMOs (Genetically modified organisms) are organisms whose genetic makeup has been altered through modification of its specific genes. GMOs widely represent all the living organisms that possess DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid); such organisms include animals, plants and bacteria. In the society today, GM foods are widely produced around the world and distributed to consumers. Other than genetically modified meat products from animals, genetically modified crops and vegetables from plants are widely consumed. This essay will talk about how transgenic crops are created and their potential and concerns.
Transgenic crop plants contain gene or genes deliberately inserted through artificial process, genes which are not acquired through pollination. The inserted gene, referred to as the transgene may come from an unrelated plant or even other species. The reason why a transgene could still function in different species is because a specific gene will not be recognized as an antigen unlike a...
