There are four main characters, Esperanza, Lucy, Rachel and Nenny. Sandra Cisneros also does great work in the imagery and metaphorical language in the book, along with Esperanzas' internal and external conflicts.

The main characters in the book are Esperanza, the writer, Nenny, Esperanzas' younger sister, Lucy and Rachel, their friends from across the street. Esperanza is the main character in the book as the aspect that she is the writer. This is her journal and these are her opinions, thoughts, and views of the world. Nenny is Esperanzas' younger sister who tags along with Esperanza everywhere...
