Summary: Compares Shakespeares "Sonnet LV" and Lawrence Ferlinghetti's "#9." Describes differences in writing styles and use of literary devices. Explains how each author approaches similar themes in a different manner.
Throughout history authors have used their words to convey messages and draw emotions from their readers. The poetry genre is perhaps the most emotion filled style of literature there is. Two poems, found in the textbook Imprints,[1] make you think about the past and the present and what will happen in the future. These two poems are "Sonnet LV" by William Shakespeare and "#9" by Lawrence Ferlingghetti. In these two poems, it seems to me that the author's are trying to make you think of the past, the present and what the present will be like as seen from the future. They also make you wonder about what part of history is real history and what is exaggerated. The formats of these poems are different too, and so are the backgrounds of the two authors, William Shakespeare and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.
