Change has affected us all at some stage in out lives, and has transformed us. This is similarly the case for the characters in the film Muriel's Wedding. The theme of change has been presented in a variety of ways, including narrative structure, acting and set design, all of which work in conjunction.
Events are presented in chronological order and are divided into three acts, staged at Porpoise Spit, Sydney and Porpoise Spit again. The three settings represent the three phases in Muriel's journey and show her progressive transformation in character as she matures and discovers herself and her changes in perspective towards marriage, life and herself.
By following the events of the film in chronological order, the audience is able to juxtapose the characters at the beginning and end of the film, and hence observe their transformations
