Analysis of Pocahontas
Pocahontas is based off of a historical figure, long ago, during the colonization of the Americas by the English. Pocahontas was a member of the Powhatan tribe, a group of Native Americans who occupied an area near what is now New Jersey. Pocahontas' real name was Matoaka. Pocahontas means "the naughty one" or "spoiled child." In the movie, Pocahontas was about 17 years old, and saved John Smith, an English man, from a clubbing from her father, Chief Powhatan. In truth, she would have been about 10 or 11 years old at the time. The sad truth is that Pocahontas, when 17, was treacherously taken prisoner by the English while she was on a social visit, and was held hostage at Jamestown for over a year.
