Insecure. Alone. Needing someone near him. The change overwhelming him. This scene is from a short story called "Charles", by Shirley Jackson. Although there is not even a Charles in the story, a lot can be found and told from him.

I wish to enlighten the reader about confidence and how lack of it causes a person to change their attitude for the certain group that they are around.

People's attitudes change according to the way they are feeling at the time, but there is always that same manner in people, even if they are angry, perky, depressed, or any other temporary emotion. Yet, with insecure people, that same unique attitude also changes to the groups of people that the insecure person is with at the time.
