Surfing as a Popular Culture
The term culture refers to the meanings that people learn from and share with each other. This includes the many beliefs, attitudes and values that are shared by members of the cultural group. Popular culture could then be thought of as the beliefs, values and attitudes of a culture, which are available for all people on a local, national or global scale.
The nature of popular culture changes over time as the idea of what is popular or fashionable change within local, national or global communities. The idea of change is influenced by the mass media such as television, film, music, magazines and the Internet. These cultures are generally made up of young people who share values that are embodied by their own mythology, heroes, dress and jargon. Due to these factors, surfing could be seen as a popular culture.
