Michigan Road Toll House
The Michigan Road Toll House is located at 4702 North Michigan Road Indianapolis, Indiana. . In the Treaty of 1826 sixty-one Pottawattamie Indians signed a land contract with the United States government. This contract made it possible for the Government to cut a trail or road through the wilderness. This road was Michigan Road. Michigan Road was the first major state road built during this time period in this area. It stretched from the Ohio River to Lake Michigan. The Toll House itself was constructed as part of a government project to collect money for new road constructions. The red brick house was built around 1850 and was used as a toll house for the newly constructed Michigan Road. The original house was one story tall and had both a store room and a small basement.
