Comparing the Poems "Snow in the Suburbs" by Thomas Hardy and "Wind" by Ted Hughes

Summary: Both Thomas Hardy's poem "Snow in the Suburbs" and Ted Hughes' poem "Wind" have the natural elements as their theme, showing the power of nature and its effect on the world. However, the two poems establish completely opposite moods through their individual uses of simile, metaphor, personification, and line length.
These poems are different in many ways, but on the other hand share close similarities. The biggest difference between these poems, are the moods that they set. They both show the power of nature and how it affects the world, however "Wind" shows natures potential for destruction and sets a violent, serious mood, whereas "Snow in the Suburbs" concentrates on nature's beauty and sets a tranquil mood. This means that they use different similes and metaphors to help set the different scenes.

For example "Wind" uses `The woods crashing through darkness' whereas "Snow in the Suburbs" uses `The steps are a balanced slope'. Another example is in "Snow in the Suburbs" it describes snow landing on someone by saying (quite comically) that the snow `Descends on him and showers his head and eyes' unlike "Wind", which describes wind going in someone's eyes as `the brunt wind that dented...
