Comparison of the Poems "Cousin Kate" and "The Seduction
Summary: Comparison and contrast of the themes of "The Seduction" by Eileen McAuley and "Cousin Kate" by Christina Rossetti.
"The Seduction" was written in the 1980's; Eileen McAuley was an English author who lived with her mother. "Cousin Kate" was written in 19th Century; Christina Rossetti was born in London, one of four children of Italian parents. The two poems are fairly similar; in my essay I will discuss the similarities and differences between the two poems. Both poems run along the same lines of a poor innocent girl being seduced and left with the aftermath of their actions. Both poems also have strong religious beliefs and due to the time in which they were written, society was ultimately male dominant which also plays a key part in both poems. The women in both poems are in societies where society is voyeuristic towards them, thus making us unable to relate it to our present day.
