The Riot
Summary: Provides a first person account of the 1988 Nigerian riot over politics and oil.
In the year 1988, crude oil was in abundance but ignorance, corruption and greed had taken it's toil on the Nigerian economy. The rumors that the price of fuel was going to be increased by 50%, sparked a lot of anger and frustration among the average citizen. A lot of families were living below the poverty line and could hardly afford to fuel their cars. Living from day to day was already hard enough as it was, and any increase might lead to some families abandoning the idea of driving or even owning a car. The federal government was given an ultimatum by the labor union to issue a statement that there will be no increase in the price of fuel but the government did not co-operate.
