The poem `Wind' by Ted Hughes describes a fierce wind storm that rages all night and day, as it is experienced by a person who is sheltering in a remote house with another. Many images, metaphors, personification and similes have been used to effectively describe the storms intensity and power.
The opening line "This house has been far out at sea all night" dramatically conveys an image of utter vulnerability and isolation. The metaphor of being "far out at sea" gives an image of a flimsy boat being pummeled and smashed, giving the effect of being totally at the mercy of Nature. The following metaphor, "winds stampeding the fields" describes the wild energy of the wind, and the thunderous noise, like the hooves of animals hitting the ground.
