Strength of Character
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth recapitulate characters whose downfall is caused by their guilt. They illustrate that guilt will prick on one's soul and cause one's downfall. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth do not have the strength of a character to ignore his/her guilt after a murder. Throughout Macbeth, the symbolism of blood and hallucinations motivated by guilt cause the Macbeths to expose their murder. Once Macbeth instigates Duncan's murder, guilt begins its own murder. With the inspiration of guilt, it conjures hallucinations of Banquo, unwashable hands, and a flying dagger to deteriorate Macbeth's and Lady Macbeth's sanity.
