Chapter 1

The introduction of characters and setting place the novel in Africa with Ezeulu the Chief Priest as the main character. You meet his immediate family. He interacts with his sons Edogo, Nwafo, Oduche and Obika Ezeulu is shown as a strong man with a temper who has strong opinions about who his sons are and what they are about. This chapter gave the flavor of the story. With the African words interspersed throughout, the reader gets the feel of the native language and customs.

Chapter 2

Chapter Two deals with the war between Umuaro and Okperi. As Chief Priest Ezeulu is against waging war but his opponent Nwaka convinces the other villages in Umuaro to go ahead and strike out against Okperi resulting in war. The white man intervened however and stopped the war, breaking all of the guns and giving the disputed...
