Black music has historically reflected the African American experience, illuminated the evolution of the mass black consciousness, and served as an aesthetic form of communication among its people. A rich variety of musical styles have mirrored the range of experiences that African Americans have encountered while living in white America; they have served as a metaphor for historical events and played a special role in the formulation of the black American psyche.
