Battle of Crcy

Summary: Describes the importance of the Battle of Crecy. Explains how it led to the development of many new types of warfare and also led to many changes in medieval society.
The battle of Crécy brought with it many new types of warfare and also led to many changes in medieval society. When King Edward III invaded Normandy, the French responded with a large force and met them at Crécy. The English brought new tactics, while the French brought old traditions. Despite the French losing more soldiers, neither army won the battle because the English didn't have the resources to continue.

One such change in warfare was the use of the longbow. The longbow was a lesser evolved version of the bow seen today and had a more rapid rate of fire. A skilled archer could shoot ten arrows in a minute, a lot quicker than the older crossbow the French used. The English relied more heavily on these crossbows, more so then cavalry. One reason the French lost so many at Crécy was from being bombarded by the English arrows.

Another such change in warfare was the use of more peasants as common foot soldiers. They were armed with pikes and the newly adopted crossbow. One reason for the use of foot soldiers was that they were easier to train. You could teach a foot soldier how to use a bow in a couple of days, while it took a knight many years of training.

The use of foot soldiers in Crécy also changed the way society was run. Since more peasants were dying in battles, wages went up for the amount of labor working peasants had. This led to higher prices on food and supplies. This change also led to the end to Feudalism since peasants were paid to fight, instead of having to do it to pay off a debt.

Crécy was a very important battle in both the 100 years' war and the history of Western Civilization. It brought long bows, as well as the use of peasants in battle. It also changed the way society was run. In the end, I believe that the Battle of Crécy was one of the most important battles in the history of the world.
