Considering the Different Qualities of Realism
Summary: Discusses Impressionism, Pre-Raphaelites and Realism. Considers similarities and differences in each form.
During the Nineteenth Century, The Pre-Raphaelites and the Impressionist began the movements that would create a constantly changing artistic world. As styles began to change, the Pre-Raphaelites proclaimed that the only true great art was that which preceded Raphael. Art was to be a portrayal of biblical, Greek and Roman Mythology and poetic scenes. Contrary to this movement, the Impressionist (who where not formally bonded as was the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but instead were more influenced by the works of Monet), stove to capture common images as though they were seem at first glimpse. Although these styles could not be more different, the theme of realism seems to arise with the mention of both. Both style contain realistic qualities, but use it in contrasting ways to define the style. Realism is not solely about creating a photo-real work of art.
