An Assessment of Lady Macbeth

Summary: Analyzes the character of Lady Macbeth from the William Shakespeare tragedy, Macbeth. Provides backround information on the play in the context of the time in which it was written. Debates if traditional analysis of Lady Macbeth is deserved.
It is believed that Shakespeare first performed Macbeth on stage in 1606. King James was in power and he was a great believer in witches. It is said because the play is a complete condemnation of the killing of the king and social order is restored at the play's conclusion that Shakespeare used Macbeth to impress him. The issues relevant to Shakespeare's audience so many years ago are still relevant today in the 21st century. The play explores one man's thirst for power which drives him to violent murder initially assisted by his wife although he leaves her behind and continues on his murderous journey until he is eventually slain, justice occurs and order is restored. Modern audiences have witnessed corruption that emanates from fascism or dictatorship.
