The Culture of Ancient Greece

Athens is the capital of Greece, which was named after the Greek god Athena who was the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. Within this city was built the mighty structure of the Parthenon Built in the 5th century B.C. created by the great sculptor Phidias. It was specially made to honor their god Athena and it is considered the greatest of the Greek temples in the Doric style.
During this time, Athens was under the leadership of Pericles who helped with the construction of the Parthenon. He was one of the great leaders whose goal was to not only the most beautiful but also the most powerful of the Greek states. He managed to accomplish this until near the end of his life when his whole kingdom was falling apart. They were constantly under siege by Sparta and Corinth in the Peloponnesian War.
