The cartoon above by Michael Leunig portrays the powerful nature of journeys, in particular imaginative journeys. The image through the central figure and the small verse on the top right hand corner, depict the nature of imaginative journeys and how they are induced. Firstly it is established through the combination of the image and the word choice in the line "a path on which to travel" that an imaginative journey is taking place. It is shown through the drawing of the man that an imaginative journey originates from the mind. The paper symbolic of the thoughts, memories, reflections and speculations of the central character are shown to be the major constituents of an imaginative journey. The cartoon also portrays the notion that obstacles and limitations are involved in imaginative journeys. The directive nature of the words in the poem such as "Let it go, Let it out" depict the initial difficulty of embarking on an imaginative journey, as it can only be undertaken when the mind is liberated. This initial obstacle when overcome, can result in an imaginative journey on the part of the traveler. The word choice in the poem is also suggestive of the limitless and multifarious quality of imaginative journeys. Words such as "free" and "unravel" show that imaginative journeys are boundless, and not confined within any limits. The vector lines from the head of the character heading off onto the right side of the page also show this particular quality of imaginative journeys.
