Common Buckthorn
family Rhamnaceae. Buckthorn tend
to shade and crowd out more desirable
plants and trees, including our native
herbs, shrubs, and indigenous wildflowers.
This tree is found in open woods, and
forest edges mostly. Its original home is
in Europe, it was brought over in the mid-
1800's to be decoratively used. Buckthorn
is an extremely easily and quickly spread
tree. When the female buckthorn's berries
are dropped, birds and other small animals
feast upon them. The berries cause an
intense laxative effect, and the berries seeds
are distributed. Buckthorn is tremendously
negative, it is strangling our indigenous
plants and trees. Controlled fires are being
spread and cutting and poisoning are being
conducted to help control the buckthorn
population. These invasive trees are terrible
and should be obliterated immediately.
