Water Chestnuts
Trapa Natans family. It displaces all native
vegetation that stands in its way. The weed
can be found in ponds, shallow lakes, and
parts of rivers. It was brought over for human
consumption in the late 1800s, originally grown in
Western Europe and Africa, and Northeast Asia.
It is exceedingly invasive, quickly occupying a site,
and then all recreational water uses are eliminated.
It is also extremely costly to control. It has both
positive and negative effects. The negative are
obvious, the weed overruns, shades, and drowns
other floating plants, on the other hand, there is
a positive effect. Water Chestnuts are sold in many
Oriental Restaurants, they have a tangy, sweetness
that some people find irresistible. Controlling
efforts are being done abruptly. Mechanical harvesting
and hand removal is helpful. I, personally, understand
why these weeds are a tremendous problem...
