Germany was unique in its position in the spheres-of-influence of both the USA and the USSR in the Cold War. Besides being an important part of Cold War diplomacy (or lack of it at times) from the beginning of the conflict to near the end, Germany was divided into halves: one communist and one capitalist.

Germany's involvement in the Cold War starts at the end of World War II and the concurrent beginning of the Cold War. The only thing that united the Allies during WWII was a common enemy, and now that enemy was beaten, the underlying tensions arose again and mutual suspicion was thick.
