Analysis of "the Seafarer" by Ezra Pound
Summary: Ezra Pound's Poem "The Seafarer" incorporates alliteration, theme, choice of character, choice of wording, structure and suggestive symbolism to reflect the current status in the United States in 1908.
The poem "The Seafarer" by Ezra Pound in 1908 expounds a superb rendition of Pound's unique style and focus. In this poem he revives a renowned Old English poem involving a wanderer. In the Old English version the wanderer "whose life at sea leads him to the pain of loneliness and physical hardship."(Knapp 38) is reflecting on his past journeys on the sea. This poem most likely struck Pound's eye because it offers a fascinating revelation of inner conflict in a tone both tough and sensitive, and supported in vivid detail. This inner conflict will lead to a passage which Pound may use in relaying a thematic suggestion to inner conflict of the United States during and after the Gilded Age.
