Summary: Rebecca Solnit's philosophy on history, as revealed in her book Hope in the Dark, is discussed in relation to the essay's author's own views on the nature of progress. Both agree that personal choices make a big difference, and that activism is a critical element in cultural change.
Hope in the Dark

What is progress? Progress is simply to move forward toward a goal, and in the book Hope in the Dark, that is what Solnit is trying to accomplish. Her whole book is about trying to get people to go out and make the world a better place. She uses many different stories about the little people who made a difference in the world. On example that Solnit used was from a WTO protest when a bankrupt Korean farmer got up on top of a fence and stabbed himself. "He died. His self-immobilization created a somber, respectful mood. . . His death, by all accounts, opened the way to victory" (120). This story shows just how great of an effect one unknown person can have. Through his actions he inspired many other people to accomplish a goal. It is not just world leaders who can make a difference...
