Germany's Political Crisis 1918-1924
By the year 1918, a proud Germany with its first class army and upstanding political party present in 1914, was in a state of ruin and the political parties were suffering greatly because of it. The allies had clearly won the war and it would have been `suicide' for Germany to continue fighting. They were offered peace with only one condition, that Germany become a democratic society. The Kaiser refused, which lead to the up rise of a Socialist revolt causing the Kaiser to resign from his position, leaving the Socialist leader Friedrich Ebert free range to his position. He was willing to sign the treaty and surrender the country to the allies. This was the beginning of the rapid decline of Germany's political situation.
