The first amendment gives Americans some of the most important freedoms today. It includes freedom of religion, speech, press, petition, and peaceable assembly, many of which we take for granted. Our founding fathers thought these rights were essential to a free society that pleased the majority as well as the minority. The first amendment guarantees that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Many people believe that this freedom does not apply in times of war and since September 11th, 2001 laws have been passed to allow religious profiling. Many American Muslims are being spied on and unreasonably searched at airports simply because of their backgrounds and religious beliefs.
