Resonating through Time
Jose Estrella's Gather His Voice deviates from the typical stage play as it creatively weaves the words and works of Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez with song, dance, film and movement to develop a distinctive theatrical montage worth watching. As a whole, the play vividly depicts the life and poetry of one of Spain's premiere poets from his roots as a young goat herder up till his final years in prison.
In my opinion, the beauty of the play lies in its artistic and symbolic approach in telling Hernandez's life story as an "artist in society" rather than a sole individual living in the Spanish Civil War. The scenes delve more on how Hernandez's poems affect other people in his time, from his youthful friends at Orihuela to the soldiers at the battle trenches during the time of war.
