Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830 in city of Amherst, Massachusetts. She was the second daughter of Edward and Emily Dickinson. Emily's mother was very withdrawn from her life and some say that this withdrawal is the cause of her eccentricity. Being born in the Puritanical state of Massachusetts, Emily was expected to follow in the religious footsteps of her relatives. At an early age kids usually follow in the footsteps of their parents, but Emily didn't seem to fit into the puritan religion. She then began to become to seclude herself from the outside world. Her father was frightened at her daughter's withdrawal from society and went as far to censor some of the books she read for fear of her loosing her faith.
