Bonding
Summary: Bonding is crucial. Atoms bond to complete their shells consequently becoming more stable. All atoms strive to be complete (following after the octet rule). Different atoms bond in different ways. This makes up molecules and holds them together. Without bonding, everything would simply collapse.
What is bonding? Bonding is the attraction between electrons of one atom to the nucleus of another. Atoms bond in order to complete their outer shell, thus becoming more stable as well as lowering the energy level. There are three main types of bonding. These are covalent, also known as molecular, ionic, and metallic.
Covalent bonding is a form of chemical bonding that results from the sharing of electrons between two different atoms. Covalent bonds are the weakest type of bonds and can only occur between two non-metals. By subtracting the electronegativities of a bond, you can determine if it is covalent or not. The electronegativity of an element is its ability to lose an electron. If this difference between the two elements is less that 1.7, then the bond is covalent. However, there are a select few that are exceptions to this rule. With this in mind, the...
