Legacies of the Jefferson Presidency: A Purchase, an Expedition, and an Amendment
Summary: As the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson left three important legacies of particular note. Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory doubled the size of the United States; the expedition of Lewis and Clark provided a greater understanding of the new territory and aided in the mapping of North America; and the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution established separate votes in the Electoral College for president and vice president, thus fixing a major constitutional flaw.
President Thomas Jefferson was our nation's third and fourth president. Through his two terms, he had a great impact on our nation. He did many great things among which are his purchase of the Louisiana Territory, the expedition of Lewis and Clark, and his Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution. His purchase of the Louisiana Territory and expedition of Lewis and Clark greatly helped to expand out nation and explore the new lands while the Twelfth Amendment helped to clear confusion in elections. Jefferson did indeed do many great things for the United States but he does seem to have three important legacies which made his two term presidency a great one.
