Summary: Endora Welty's "A Worn Path" is a story about an elderly woman named Phoenix and her obstacles to help her sick and dying grandson. Along the long path she takes to obtain medication for her grandson, the obstacles she encounters include racism, poverty, and her age, but her thinking of her grandson enables her to overcome the obstacles.

Phoenix's Obstacles

"A Worn Path" tells the story of the love of a grandmother and the obstacles she must face for her dying grandson. On Phoenix Jackson's journey to help stop her grandson's pain, she hikes up a long path to get him the medication he needs. She meets many diverse people and has many troubles getting there, yet she doesn't give up. Ms Jackson is very driven to help her grandson and that determination is what makes her overcome her many obstacles.

Race and poverty are huge problems for Phoenix. A young white hunter she meets somewhere down that old worn path says to her, "I know you old colored people! Wouldn't miss going to town to see Santa Claus!" She has had to deal with racism her whole life. Being a former slave she knows very well how some people treat blacks...
